| Young vocalist stresses respect and restraint
NEW YORK These days, neither music schools nor underground club circuits seem to produce male jazz vocalists at the rate they do female singers or instrumentalists of either sex. Boys with voices head for Broadway or R&B; in jazz, perhaps the concatenation of traditional gender roles with the competitive geekery inherent in the genre pushes males toward instrumental abstraction and away from something as direct and tender as a song. At any rate, its not often that a male singer makes a noteworthy recorded debut, so when it happens, its worth checking in. This week offers just that opportunity with the release of Eyes Wide Open, the poised first album by Sachal Vasandani, a 28-year-old singer with a cool baritone, eclectic inspirations, and hints of the proverbial old soul.
'Payback time' after Yellow Pages sale
When Fairfax bought Trade Me for $700 million last year, it looked like confirmation that the new economy was winning out over the old. The price paid for the 55-person company wasn't so far short of the $1.2 billion paid by Fairfax in 2003 for INL's extensive print empire. Last week the "old economy" got its own back when private equity firms paid more than the sum of both those acquisitions for Telecom's Yellow Pages business, and the right to send out the stolid yellow business directory to households once a year. There would have been benefits in keeping the Yellow Pages within Telecom's stable. Around the world, small businesses have been slow to embrace online advertising and it would have been helpful to use Yellow Pages' sales team to cross-sell businesses online advertisements dished up through Telecom's YahooXtra portal.

While reports of IA crowd reaction to ex-NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) are good, reports on the size of those crowds are underwhelming. Unfair or not, Giuliani is being cast as the 'rock star' candidate in the GOP field, and while that may have been a choice position to be in past cycles, this year it invites comparisons to the Dems rock star, Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL). So far Giuliani is simply not measuring up to Obama when it comes to turnout. The Giuliani camp never said they planned to make IA central to their strategy, but if Rudy plans to take the big 2/5 states, he better hope his rock star rises.
