GFW Live: Worth Gamers' Money and Devs' Support?

Xbox Live offers unified friend lists, universal voice chat, quality control and anti-cheat protection, along with access to "achievements," virtual certificates awarded for completing in-game challenges. This March, Microsoft asked PC gamers to get with the online gaming network program.

MS reps say their reasoning is twofold: connect Xbox 360 and PC gaming communities, and enhance the online experience for PC gamers. Registered Xbox Live Gold members (see sidebar) automatically receive Games for Windows Live privileges at no additional cost -- input their existing gamertags, and off they go. Everyone else either signs up for the feature-light but free Silver package or pays a $49.95 annual premium for Gold. That is, of course, if they can be convinced to try it at all.

In its June issue, Games for Windows: The Official Magazine asks Games for Windows and Xbox boss Peter Moore and Live general manager J.J.

Manning copies UNC Talkback

The Theme of tonights Talk-Back Forum is Tourism. Those who have spoken before me have told you enough about what the UNC intends to do about Tourism when it gets into office after the next general elections; I do not intend to attempt to guild the lily by repeating what they have said. What I would like to add, however, is you must see Tourism development in Trinidad and Tobago not in isolation but as part of a national development plan for the entire country. Since we began this new format of our Monday Night meetings to include a talk back Forum where we listen to the people and answer questions indicating what the UNC will do about your problems we have spoken about crime and insecurity, increasing the prosperity of our citizens, inflation and high prices, youth and unemployment, agriculture and tonight Tourism.

Mama-rama: No such thing as easy money

When I was 17, my stepmother and I were invited to a "ladies' night out" by a friend of hers from church. It turned out to be a hard-sell pep rally for a well-known cosmetics company. A woman with very large earrings and even larger hair, her face shellacked with several layers of make-up, told the rapt audience that selling this "best-selling brand" of cosmetics and skin-care products had changed her life: boosted her self-confidence, improved her relationships, and earned her lots of money and a free car.

I was sold. I signed that day, fudging my birth date on the contract with a wink of approval from the cosmetics queen herself.

It took me a few hours to come to a discouraging reality: at 17, none of my friends had any money. None of them wore much makeup. And if they had, it would have been some glittery, peppy teen brand, not this dowdy standby.

Kenya: Sh50 Will Buy the Latest Hollywood Release

Take a walk across Nairobi or any other major town and you are likely to stumble upon someone hawking pirated movies in the form of DVDs, some going for half the price of a film ticket.

Pirated DVDs are the latest addition to the list of hawked items, and one can get a Nigerian movie for as little as Sh50. And for Sh100, you can watch all the films that won the Oscars a fortnight ago, although you will have to contend with poor quality.

United Way's role evolves

Time was when the United Way didn't give money to people like Christopher McSherry, at least not directly.

When he came home injured in December following a National Guard tour in Iraq, McSherry found himself in a desperate financial crisis. He needed several thousand dollars to pay his mortgage, and he simply didn't have the cash.

New 3-D films promise big thrills for moviegoers

By the end of the decade, Darth Vader could be rattling sabres with his enemies above the heads of moviegoers, and Buzz Lightyear could be flying off the screen on his way to infinity and beyond. For real - or at least the cinematic version of real: 3D. A growing number of blockbuster, live-action films and animated movies are expected to be offered in in-your-face 3-D in the next few years, as thousands of theatres are outfitted with the special projectors and screens needed to show the films.

Jeffrey Katzenberg, chief executive of DreamWorks Animation SKG, is so gung-ho about 3-D that he has said his studio might start exclusively releasing movies in the format as early as 2009 with its "Monsters vs. Aliens." "For Memorial Day weekend 2009, I would like to see 3,800 locations and 6,000 screens that we can put our movie on.
