| Public must decide how much it will pay for good roads
Here is a list of rough roads from one person who responded to an entry on the "Hot Topics" blog at www.herald-dispatch.com: W.Va. 10 from Davis Creek Mountain to Salt Rock; McComas Road at least from Roach Road to Tom's Creek; Tom's Creek/Cyrus Creek Road from McComas Road to U.S. 60; U.S. 60 from Russell Creek to Interstate 64. Those are all outside Huntington city limits. Huntington streets need work, too. Potholes and rough roads are part of spring, just as ticks are. Do they have to be, though? West Virginia funds the Division of Highways so that each of the roughly 37,370 miles of state-maintained road can be repaved every 22 years. Secretary of Transportation Paul Mattox says shortening the paving cycle to every 10 years would require $200 million more a year than is available now.

Are America’s Doctors Accepting “Drug” Money? AMA Report Details ...
There is nothing illegal about doctors' accepting money for marketing talks, and professional organizations have largely ignored the issue. But research shows that doctors who have close relationships with drug makers tend to prescribe more, newer and pricier drugs — whether or not they are in the best interests of patients. “When honest human beings have a vested stake in seeing the world in a particular way, they're incapable of objectivity and independence," said Max H. Bazerman, a professor at Harvard Business School. “A doctor who represents a pharmaceutical company will tend to see the data in a slightly more positive light and as a result will over prescribe that company's drugs." In an e-mail message, Collins said he personally received in 2004 less than $10,000 from Amgen for educational presentations.

New Video Reveals Amy Baker's Relationship With David Carroll
New information in the Marcus Fiesel case disputes claims that Amy Baker was an unwilling participant in the 3-year-old's murder. David and Liz Carroll have both been convicted of Marcus' murder. Amy Baker was the star witness against them after being granted immunity. David Carroll said he feared her, but that's not what newly released surveillance video from a check cashing store. David Carroll and Amy Baker went to the store just two days after Marcus was dead and two days before Liz Carroll made her public plea that Marcus was missing. It was August 8 when David and Amy walked into the CheckSmart store on Old Route 28 in Clermont County's Miami Township to try and cash a $2,200 money order. As they kissed and separated, the CheckSmart security system was about to start unraveling what had happened to Marcus Fiesel.

Silicon Valley switches focus to energy
Venture capitalists in Silicon Valley have been searching for the next big thing in high-tech for years, but now many have switched to greener pursuits - finding technology to help cut global warming. Although commercial success could take years, venture capitalists are pouring cash into solar power, fuel cells, wind energy, biofuels, new lighting microchips, "smart" power grids, and other innovative energies. "The best brains in the country are no longer working on the next pharmaceutical drug or the next Silicon Revolution. They want to work on energy," said Vinod Khosla, a top venture capitalists in Silicon Valley. While there is competition from Canada, Germany, China, India and other nations, traditional energy companies have been relatively quiet.
