| Odds are against scholastic athletes
OK all of you moms and dads out there who are bending, folding, molding and manipulating your sons and daughters with visions of scholarships and big paydays dancing in your heads, a word of advice: You're probably chasing smoke. Your odds of hitting the lottery are almost as good as the chance that your offspring is going to be awarded a grant-in-aid to an NCAA school. And if you're thinking beyond that, you're sadly misguided. Better to make sure your kids get their BS or MBA than to spend all of that money on trying to get them to the NBA, NFL or MLB. The NCAA has just released the results of a study that ought to have you monitoring your kid's GPA instead of his or her ERA. You're out there and you know who you are. We know you, too.

FSB targets life assurers' funds for closer scrutiny
The life assurance industry is slowly having its wings clipped in order to give retirement fund members greater protection. Historically, the life assurance industry has been given virtually total freedom of movement to do as it wants with any retirement funds it manages under a policy. These funds include everything from retirement annuity (RA) funds, preservation funds for individuals, through to umbrella funds and employer-sponsored funds where the assets are invested through a life assurance policy. These funds are known as underwritten funds. The funds were subject to far less regulation and regulator oversight because it was considered that the Long Term Insurance Act provided sufficient security for members. The life assurance industry is based on the risk assurance principle of a benefit being promised in return for a premium.
Phone scam aimed at taking money from bank accounts
GLADWIN COUNTY -- The Michigan State PoliceGladwin Post is warning the elderly about a scam aimed at snatching money from their bank accounts. The state police post received reports from a local woman who said she received a phone call from a man who said he was from the Social Security office, and he needed to verify information for the womans Medicare. The first problem, according to police, is that no one will ever call from Social Security or Medicare. MSP Detective VanHorn said that a program called VOIP (Voice Over Internet Phone) allows predators to enter which phone number they are calling from. You cant even trust your caller I.D. anymore, he said. The woman reported that the caller already had her account number and asked her to verify her account information.
Championship best for thrills and spills, Roy
WITH his former club turning the Premiership title race into little more than a procession, Roy Keane has urged the nation's football fans to turn towards the Championship if they are on the look-out for excitement this Easter. While the majority of the top-flight goes through the motions this weekend, Sunderland will be involved in back-to-back promotion blockbusters, with Mick McCarthy bringing his Wolves side to the Stadium of Light this afternoon before the Black Cats travel to play-off hopefuls Southampton on Monday. With just ten points separating the top six teams in the table ahead of the Easter programme, this weekend's fixtures could prove crucial in determining who wins promotion to the Premiership next month. .
