Lenders fear credit clampdown after subprime meltdown
The American dream of home ownership could prove even more elusive as lenders clamp down in the wake of a rising foreclosure rate for the riskiest loans, say bankers, economists and community activists. All expect a tightening of credit as lenders and the institutions that fund them take stock of an apparent crisis in subprime loans, mortgages at high rates of interest made mostly to borrowers with shaky credit ratings. Most also expect pressure from legislators and others to increase regulation of the industry. Don Menendez, a senior loan officer at USA Mortgage in Creve Coeur, said he already is seeing some sources of subprime lending dry up. Other funding sources are raising the credit rating needed to get a loan. "Every day, I'm getting e-mail saying that this program now requires a certain credit score or the programs have been deleted," Menendez said.
Money Talks, but What Does It Mean?
WASHINGTON -- The first peek at Republican presidential candidates' early fund-raising totals confirms that the party has a reshuffled -- and unsettled -- race for the 2008 presidential nomination. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney earned a second and deeper look at his candidacy by reporting yesterday that he raised nearly $21 million this year, to lead his party's pack in first-quarter fund raising. In contrast, Arizona Sen. John McCain, who had already lost his front-runner status in polls, reported an admittedly disappointing $12.5 million for a third-place finish. Second place went instead to Rudy Giuliani, who collected nearly $15 million despite his late start, which, along with his strong poll showings, confirms the former New York mayor's status as Republicans' current hot property.
