BNP-M announces protest campaign against govt policies

QUETTA: The Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M) has announced that it will hold a series of public meetings to protest the governments anti-people policies, including the military operation in the province, the construction and subsequent handover of the Gwadar deep seaport project to the Port Singapore Authority, disappearance of the Baloch youth and arrest of party leaders and construction of cantonments, etc.

Announcing the protest programme spanning over around four months, BNP-Ms Acting President Dr Jehanzeb Jamaldini told a press conference that the decision was taken at a meeting of the partys central committee held here on Sunday.

He said the first public meeting of the series would be held on April 29 at Hub and the last on August 26 in Karachi, coinciding with the death anniversary of veteran Baloch chieftain Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti and his companions in the Tartani area of Kohlu district.

State moving up in the ranks

OUR OPINION: N.C. State is in a league of its own when it comes to music and movie piracy as we rank among the top in nation in both categories, and these achievements are more than fitting considering our affinity for swashbuckling pirates.

Our University is moving up in the ranks fast, but these rankings have nothing to do with sports or the quality of our academics.

Piracy is our forte and we exercise it better than most schools in the country. East Carolina pirates look like law-abiding nobles compared to us, and for good reason.

We have discovered a way to save money, by not spending any on music or movies. The ability to squander money from people who are already rich is a life-skill -- much more important than any game based on athletic ability.

'Tweens' tap into the Web

For a stuffed bulldog, Calvin has it pretty good. He lives a full, if virtual, life online and has a pad decked out to his tastes, which currently run sort of froggy style, says owner and decorator Jake Reynolds, a 9-year-old from Forest Hill.

Six months ago, the third-grader got sucked into Calvin's world and hasn't left it since. He can't. Once Jake used the secret code that came with his store-bought bulldog to create an online version at Webkinz.com, he committed to feeding and shopping for the pup regularly while interacting with other kids and their virtual pets on the Internet.

"You have to play it mostly every two days or every day, because if you don't, then their health meter goes all the way down and they'll get sick," Jake says matter-of-factly.

Hip-hop markets 'the brand'

In a posh suite in a swanky hotel above Los Angeles, hip-hop artist Lil Jon jerks a controller to a video game, manipulating an image of himself. The on-screen Lil Jon is seen fighting to Lil Jon music and wearing a Lil Jon brand T-shirt and characteristic dreadlocks.

In addition to the video game, the artist, known as the King of Crunk, is also featured in an energy drink (Crunk Juice), a clothing line, Oakley sunglasses, a Comedy Central cartoon show that's in development and, of course, a few albums.

''Once you get popular, you have a brand,'' he said. ''You have to market that brand.''

Lil Jon, born Jonathan Mortimer Smith, is hardly unique in the hip-hop world, which long ago established itself as a cultural enterprise that went far beyond CD sales.

Question of the week: Is the threat of human-caused climate change ...

Bad Reporter wrote on April 07, 2007 6:17 PM:"Maybe the Napa Register should try actually reporting the news, instead of using student newspaper tactics to fill pages. Why actually go out and get facts, when you can let uninformed people hurl insults at one another, fueling already sore tempers of frustrated Americans?"

chris wrote on April 07, 2007 4:26 PM:"Kevin, I defend your right to buy an incandescent light bulb. I think that eventually technology will make the incandescent bulb obsolete, but if the florescent ones give you a headache, why buy them. Government shouldn't be making rules that say you have to buy one. In the same vein, I don't think that government should be making their energy policy behind closed doors with people who's interest is making money with as few regulations as possible, as did the current occupant of the White House did.

Buffett plays trains with US$3.2b Burlington stake

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway has acquired a 10.9 percent stake in Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp, according to US Securities and Exchange Commission filings, making the billionaire's company the largest holder.

Berkshire owned 39 million shares of the second-largest US railroad as of April 5, after reporting a holding of 37.4 million shares April 3, the filings show.

Buffett reported to shareholders February 28 all the company's holdings with a market value of more than US$700 million (HK$5.46 billion) at the end of 2006. He noted there were two exceptions to the list with a value of US$1.9 billion that he did not itemize "because we continue to buy them. I could of course, tell you their names. But then I would have to kill you." The market value of the railroad stake is US$3.2 billion.
